The hammer dulcimer is the forerunner of the piano - steel strings are stretched across a sound box and sounded by being struck
with hammers.
This recording features also the plucked or stroked dulcimer - not to be confused with the appalacian dulcimer.
The stroked dulcimer is traditional to the centre of England
It is the same shape and configuration as the hammered dulcimer, but played by stroking the strings with the fingers rather than by
striking with hammers. This produces a remarkable harmonic from the resultant arpeggio.
